The head isn’t all that impressive, but it’s definitely catchy. What you are going to want to do is take a listen to Arturo Sandoval’s flugelhorn solo at about 3:15 on the trumpet video. Just amazing. I’m going to be stealing a few licks from this video and posting them on the site because there are some really good ones in it.

So I decided to browse You Tube a little bit to see if I could find some good ideas. Low and behold, guess what I found? A really cool and awesome trumpet solo of Freddie Hubbard taking a ride on Autumn Leaves. Plus you can hear how he interprets the head of Autumn Leaves as well as Freddie Hubbard’s usage of the 3rd valve on As and Es on the flugelhorn.

A couple other things to note about this great trumpet clip. Freddie Hubbard does a nice cadenza at the end and shows off his trumpet style in so many other ways. There is also another trumpet player in the video that sound pretty good. I don’t know his name though. If anyone could help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Jon Faddis is really something else. How he got his trumpet chops to be so strong, I will forever wonder. Anyway, this awesome Jazz video of Jon Faddis taking a trumpet solo in the presence of Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and Jon Henricks.

The thing I like best about this video is being able to watch Jon Faddis adjust his embouchure to go into the upper range. I notice a lot of trumpet players do this.

There are a whole bunch of cool things James Morrison (an Australian trumpet player/trombone player) shows off on. Switching back and forth between trombone and trumpet, multiphonics at the beginning on trombone, using a trombone trigger to play a bunch of Jazz licks on trombone, and of course a lot of high notes. He goes up to a high G, but mainly does it one handed while making it look very easy. The blues changes are of the tune, “Things Ain’t What They Used to be”.

When I was watching this Jazz video I noticed how Tom Harrell rests his fingers over his trumpet valves. I’m wondering if this helps his technique overall on the trumpet. According to how he sounds in the Jazz clip I’m going to have to say that it helps him quite a bit.

This great recording of Tom Harrell took place in Hamburg of 1988. I have one problem though, I’m not sure what the name of the tune is. If anyone could help me out on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Freddie Hubbard plays a lot of good minor Jazz licks in this solo with a few good licks that are definitely worth learning. I also like how Freddie Hubbard really gets into his solos and takes the mouthpiece off his lips to break his solos up a little bit.

Apparently this video was taken back in 1984 with the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers in Tokyo Japan. The tune is A La Mode.

Vizzutti is cool because he can do tunes like Fire Dance that sort of combine Jazz soloing along with classical trumpet technique that is really impressive. Things like double tonguing octaves, circular breathing, etc…

Allen Vizzutti takes an awesome trumpet ride on this tune and an amazing trumpet cadenza at the end with a bunch of high notes in between. I hope you enjoy!
