Freddie Hubbard with Jazz Messengers on A La Mode

Posted on November 30, 2009 by Sweets

If you haven’t heard this energetic Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo yet you’re in for a real treat. Freddie Hubbard plays a lot of good minor Jazz licks in this solo with a few good licks that are definitely worth learning. I also like how Freddie Hubbard really gets into his solos and takes the mouthpiece off his lips to break his solos up a little bit.

Apparently this video was taken back in 1984 with the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers in Tokyo Japan. The tune is A La Mode.

Freddie Hubbard solo on a Jazz standard – Joy Spring

Posted on September 30, 2009 by ashizuru

It was nice to hear Freddie Hubbard’s rendition of Joy Spring by Clifford Brown. I never heard him take a ride on this tune. Freddie Hubbard definitely does a great job of adding his unique Jazz style to the tune.

One thing I’ve always noticed about Freddie Hubbard is that he likes to takes really long trumpet solos. That’s cool with me, he definitely had the chops for it back in the day, if you know what I mean. I really wish Freddie Hubbard was still alive and soloing all over the place so I can get even more Jazz licks from him.

If you know the chord changes to Joy Spring, there are a whole bunch of great Jazz licks you can get from this solo.  I’m going to go through the Jazz solo and see what I can steal myself.

Awesome Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo on Cherokee 2

Posted on July 09, 2009 by Sweets

I just had to share this awesome muted Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo on Cherokee with you. I’ve never heard Freddie Hubbard play the trumpet so fast and have so many good ideas at the same time. When you watch this Jazz video, keep an eye on Freddie Hubbard’s fingers and see how clean his trumpet fingering really is. I don’t even think Freddie Hubbard is looking at his trumpet valves either. Smokin trumpet solo, really!

This is a live 1990 recording that took place in Japan at the Blue Note. I had the opportunity to see the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Star Big Band perform at the Blue Note in Japan. It’s kind of cool to see another live performance at the same place years earlier.

Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo on Open Sesame

Posted on June 20, 2009 by Sweets

Freddie Hubbard TrumpetThis Jazz trumpet solo of Freddie Hubbard is really great. Very melodic and builds very nicely. The tune Open Sesame, from the album Open Sesame, switches back and forth between G minor and C minor (I think – let me know by commenting). Lots of cool minor Jazz licks to take advantage of in this Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo. Of course Freddie Hubbard nails all the chord changes in this great Jazz solo as well!

Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo on Cantelope Island 4

Posted on May 06, 2009 by Sweets

Freddie Hubbard takes a great Jazz trumpet solo on Cantelope Island. If you are interested in getting the DVD it’s One Night With Blue Note. This is actually one of Freddie Hubbard’s most famous trumpet solos. One of the things I love about Freddie Hubbard is how much he really gets into his solos and moves around a lot. I believe that this is one of the things Freddie Hubbard is most known for in the Jazz world, a lot of movement while playing his trumpet solos.

Another thing about this Jazz trumpet video, is you can really hear how Freddie Hubbard uses a lot of space in the beginning of his trumpet solo and then gradually builds it from there.
