I just had to share this video with everyone. Jon Faddis is really something else. How he got his trumpet chops to be so strong, I will forever wonder. Anyway, this awesome Jazz video of Jon Faddis taking a trumpet solo in the presence of Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and Jon Henricks.

The thing I like best about this video is being able to watch Jon Faddis adjust his embouchure to go into the upper range. I notice a lot of trumpet players do this.

What do you think?

There are a whole bunch of cool things James Morrison (an Australian trumpet player/trombone player) shows off on. Switching back and forth between trombone and trumpet, multiphonics at the beginning on trombone, using a trombone trigger to play a bunch of Jazz licks on trombone, and of course a lot of high notes. He goes up to a high G, but mainly does it one handed while making it look very easy. The blues changes are of the tune, “Things Ain’t What They Used to be”.

Click the red play button to listen to Arturo Sandoval’s great trumpet performance, lots of great licks to steal in the video.

One of the main reasons I wanted to share this Jazz trumpet video with you is because there are some really great close ups of how Arturo Sandoval handles the trumpet while doing some really intense soloing.

If you look closely, you can see how Arturo Sandoval switches back and forth between flat trumpet fingerings and curled trumpet fingerings. I’m not a 100% sure on how this helps his trumpet technique, but it obviously must be doing something for him.

Also take a look at how Arturo Sandoval sets up his chops before playing in the super upper register on trumpet. It’s just something to think about. There is a really nice pedal tone performance at the end of his solo, finally ending on a super high note. Anyway, Arturo performed this great trumpet solo back in 1991 at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival

I had the great opportunity to live in Japan for 5 years. While I was stationed in Japan I also had the opportunity to meet Eric Miyashiro in person. It’s a funny story really, I was at a music store near Tokyo and heard a trumpet player doing two octave lip slurs in the distance. I was curious to see who it was because the trumpet player was wailing up to double high Cs and beyond in his lip slurs.

I walked towards the trumpet high notes and to my utter amazement, Eric Miyashiro was in a separate room giving a Yamaha trumpet clinic to about 30 viewers. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. I stood outside as the clinic continued on. Eric Miyashiro continued to play some Maynard Ferguson type Jazz licks on different Yamaha trumpets. After each Maynard sound sample he spoke in Japanese about each trumpet.

After the clinic was finished, I seized the opportunity to introduce myself to Eric Miyashiro as he walked out of the room. I haphazardly told him I was a big fan. He asked me if I play. I told him I was in the Navy Band over in Yokosuka. He surprisingly got excited and happily stated that he loved performing with the Navy Band folks. He even mentioned a bunch of names of Navy cats that he used to work with.

That was my first experience meeting Eric Miyashiro. I got to see him perform several times while I was stationed in Japan. Great times!

I love this video of Eric Miyashiro performing Give it One. He has such a powerful trumpet sound.

If you want to get right to the Jon Faddis trumpet solo, skip ahead on the video to 1:40 . I’m not saying the sax player isn’t worth listening to, I’m just trying to save some of your time as these are busy times. Jon Faddis improvises a little bit more towards the end as he and the sax player trade before going back into the head. I love high note trumpet solos that also have Jazz licks in them.

I wonder what tempo they are taking Donna Lee at, does anybody think they know? This video is of a TV broadcast performed live in the mid 1990s.

If you haven’t watched this great Jazz video of Scott Englebright (aka “Scooter”) performing the tune Maynard Ferguson you’re in for a real treat. That’s right, Maynard Ferguson is the name of the tune. I always thought that was a weird name for a tune. What do you think?

This was when Scott Englebright was at the University of North Texas. At one point I wanted to go to this University. UNT is considered one of the best Jazz Universities around. Anyway, the reason I added the Jazz video to the site is because there are a lot of high notes and Scott Englebright has a really fat trumpet sound.

By the way, is Scooter’s last name spelled Engelbright, or Englebright? I’ve seen it spelled both ways all over the internet.

You’re really going to love this trumpet solo of Jon Faddis on Mood Indigo if you haven’t heard it yet. If you have heard it, you’ll still love to hear it again because it’s just that good.

Jon Faddis plays a bunch of lip trills on a high C, then a high E, and finally hits the highest note of a high Bb. You know, the one that’s a whole step below a double high C.

After that, Jon Faddis holds out a really nice high G with great vibrato for an impressive period of time. Even though all the high notes are cool, my favorite part is at the end of the trumpet solo where Jon Faddis plays a really fast bebop lick to ponder over.

This trumpet solo is from the album To Diz with Love: Diamond Jubilee Recordings and was recorded live, you need to own it.

You’re are going to love this live Jazz trumpet video of Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker, Chuck Findley, and Byron Stripling all taking a ride on Cherokee, trading eights, and starting and finishing with a great harmonized head of Cherokee. All four of these top notch trumpet players take phenomenal Jazz rides on Cherokee, which we all know is a pretty tough tune. Arturo Sandoval plays some pretty impressive high notes, Byron Stripling nails every chord change, Chuck Findley plays a very melodic trumpet solo, and Randy Brecker shows off his trumpet style all in one very fast, trumpet lick filled Jazz video. This recording was performed with the GRP All Star Big Band.
