Trumpet mouthpiece for Jazz playing. What is the best mouthpiece for playing Jazz trumpet? Quite honestly, I couldn't tell you. What I can say is that what mouthpiece you play on is entirely based off of feel and ease of playing plus the type of sound you want. I can also let you know what mouthpiece(s) I play on for Jazz trumpet. This essentially means that there is no right or wrong mouthpiece for Jazz trumpet playing.

I tend to lean towards the Bobby Shew mouthpiece method of playing trumpet. This doesn't work for everyone, but it works well for me. What is the Bobby Shew method of mouthpiece usage? It is where you use two different mouthpieces, one mouthpiece for a smooth, darker timbre (larger cup size), and another mouthpiece for a more edgy trumpet sound (smaller cup size) so you don't have to work as hard to project. The smaller mouthpiece doesn't necessarily make it easier to play in the upper register, it mainly gives you a more piercing trumpet sound.

The reason why I said this doesn't work for everyone is because a lot of trumpet players don't like switching between two different mouthpieces unless the two mouthpieces have similar rims. Take a look at Arturo Sandoval for example, he only uses one 3C trumpet mouthpiece for all his playing. We all know that Arturo Sandoval has a piercing, fat, trumpet sound plus a super high note register without the need for a smaller mouthpiece.

Here is how I use the two mouthpieces:

Larger cup mouthpiece:

  • Combo - Jazz Standards
  • Classical, legit playing
  • Concert Band
  • Brass Quintet

Smaller cup mouthpiece:

  • Big Band or Show Band
  • Lead trumpet playing
  • Brass Band or Dixieland
  • Rock Band

These are just my personal mouthpiece preferences though.  Grin

Favorite trumpet solo ever -- They don't call me "Sweets" because I play sweet, they call me "Sweets" because I like to eat sweets.
