I just had to share this awesome muted Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo on Cherokee with you. I’ve never heard Freddie Hubbard play the trumpet so fast and have so many good ideas at the same time. When you watch this Jazz video, keep an eye on Freddie Hubbard’s fingers and see how clean his trumpet fingering really is. I don’t even think Freddie Hubbard is looking at his trumpet valves either. Smokin trumpet solo, really!
This is a live 1990 recording that took place in Japan at the Blue Note. I had the opportunity to see the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Star Big Band perform at the Blue Note in Japan. It’s kind of cool to see another live performance at the same place years earlier.
Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra were at the 2009 New Orleans Jazz Fest on Saturday the 25th of April. I was fortunate enough to get down to the Jazz Fest and hear the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra perform. They sounded absolutely great and the crowd really had a good time.
Wynton Marsalis has a really good line up of a trumpet section as well. Ryan Kisor, Marcus Printup, and Sean Jones all took awesome trumpet solos. I was really impressed. Unfortunately I didn’t get the idea to start recording some of their trumpet solos with my iPhone until the end of the concert. I should’ve brought my video camera, but I wasn’t thinking.
At the end of the show, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra rhythm section did some G blues. I apologize that the sound quality isn’t that great, but you can really hear how simple the solo is, yet it really swings. Real New Orleans style playing. I wasn’t able to get the whole trumpet solo, but I hope you enjoy what I was able to record.
Here is an awesome Jazz trumpet solo of Tom Harrell with Jacky Terrasson playing piano on their Moon & Sand album. Tom Harrell takes a ride on Tune Up which is a pretty fast tune, but he nails the solo to the wall. Tune up is basically 3 different ii V7 I chords played over and over again. This means you can get a lot of good ii V7 I licks listening to Tom Harrell on this solo.
This Jazz trumpet solo gets really addicting the more you listen to it. Feel free to leave any comments on this post if you get any good licks from Tom Harrell’s trumpet solo.

This new blog was created for trumpet players interested in finding some new Jazz licks. Of course, everyone is welcome. You don't have to play trumpet to use the licks and patterns on this site. There are cool Jazz trumpet videos, Jazz trumpet solos, and a Jazz trumpet forum to take advantage of as well.
Their ain't nothin' wrong with being a copy cat, as long as you copy the right Cat.
