I just had to share this awesome muted Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo on Cherokee with you. I’ve never heard Freddie Hubbard play the trumpet so fast and have so many good ideas at the same time. When you watch this Jazz video, keep an eye on Freddie Hubbard’s fingers and see how clean his trumpet fingering really is. I don’t even think Freddie Hubbard is looking at his trumpet valves either. Smokin trumpet solo, really!
This is a live 1990 recording that took place in Japan at the Blue Note. I had the opportunity to see the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Star Big Band perform at the Blue Note in Japan. It’s kind of cool to see another live performance at the same place years earlier.
You’re are going to love this live Jazz trumpet video of Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker, Chuck Findley, and Byron Stripling all taking a ride on Cherokee, trading eights, and starting and finishing with a great harmonized head of Cherokee. All four of these top notch trumpet players take phenomenal Jazz rides on Cherokee, which we all know is a pretty tough tune. Arturo Sandoval plays some pretty impressive high notes, Byron Stripling nails every chord change, Chuck Findley plays a very melodic trumpet solo, and Randy Brecker shows off his trumpet style all in one very fast, trumpet lick filled Jazz video. This recording was performed with the GRP All Star Big Band.
I wanted to share a really fast Jazz trumpet solo of Ryan Kisor on the tune Cherokee from his album entitled Kisor. It’s a really good CD, definitely take a look at it. I don’t know what tempo Ryan Kisor took Cherokee at though.
Ryan Kisor starts Cherokee off soloing right away, no head is played on this recording. There are a lot of good Jazz licks to take advantage of from this recording. Ryan Kisor does this alternate fingering Jazz lick going down a scale one note at a time. The alternate fingering Jazz lick happens so fast that it is hard to write down at first though. I hope you enjoy this Jazz trumpet solo.
Here are two really great videos of Wynton Marsalis performing Cherokee on trumpet. It can be a really tough tune depending on how fast you take it. Notice that in both Jazz videos Wynton Marsalis uses circular breathing to extend his lines to unusual lengths.

This new blog was created for trumpet players interested in finding some new Jazz licks. Of course, everyone is welcome. You don't have to play trumpet to use the licks and patterns on this site. There are cool Jazz trumpet videos, Jazz trumpet solos, and a Jazz trumpet forum to take advantage of as well.
Their ain't nothin' wrong with being a copy cat, as long as you copy the right Cat.
