It’s always cool to hear a famous Jazz trumpet player like Terence Blanchard at a jam session. I’ve never got to hear him really play without a whole bunch of bends in his trumpet solo until I watched this Jazz video clip of him at the 2007 Vitoria Jazz Festival. I’m not 100% sure of the chord changes, I think it is from the tune Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise.
Notice how Terence Blanchard uses a whole bunch of chromatic Jazz licks as his style of trumpet playing which is cool. Even though Terence Blanchard is jamming, he maintains his own unique style on the trumpet. He really doesn’t use a whole lot of breaks though. Instead he goes hard core pretty much all the way until the end of his jam session Jazz solo.
It was nice to hear Freddie Hubbard’s rendition of Joy Spring by Clifford Brown. I never heard him take a ride on this tune. Freddie Hubbard definitely does a great job of adding his unique Jazz style to the tune.
One thing I’ve always noticed about Freddie Hubbard is that he likes to takes really long trumpet solos. That’s cool with me, he definitely had the chops for it back in the day, if you know what I mean. I really wish Freddie Hubbard was still alive and soloing all over the place so I can get even more Jazz licks from him.
If you know the chord changes to Joy Spring, there are a whole bunch of great Jazz licks you can get from this solo. I’m going to go through the Jazz solo and see what I can steal myself.
I’ve always enjoyed the unique Jazz trumpet style of Randy Brecker. There are some really nice diminished patterns that Randy Brecker repeats of few times in this trumpet solo. The trumpet solo starts off with a harmon mute, then Randy plays the rest of the solo open.
Why he did this, I don’t know.
It’s kind of hard to hear the chord changes going on behind him. It’s hard to believe, but Randy Brecker was playing at Jazz Land in Hungary in this video.
Take a listen to this nice Jazz trumpet solo of Ryan Kisor on Fly me to the Moon. I can’t say much about the sax player, so the comments say in You tube. This Jazz video displays good use of Ryan Kisor’s trumpet technique. Ryan Kisor’s trumpet sound is very clean on this tune. Notice how Ryan Kisor makes all the chord changes on this tune even though his trumpet solo really isn’t that impressive. This is what makes a great Jazz musician, the ability to sound good all the time even if you are not super man every time.
I wanted to share this live Jazz trumpet solo of Sean Jones on the tune I’ll Remember April. This performance took place at Gregory’s Jazz Club back in 2008. I like the name of that Jazz Club because my name is Gregory as well. Anyway, this trumpet solo of Sean Jones is very good. Sean Jones nails all the chord changes on I’ll Remember April. I hope you enjoy this Jazz video as much as I did.
This new blog was created for trumpet players interested in finding some new Jazz licks. Of course, everyone is welcome. You don't have to play trumpet to use the licks and patterns on this site. There are cool Jazz trumpet videos, Jazz trumpet solos, and a Jazz trumpet forum to take advantage of as well.
Their ain't nothin' wrong with being a copy cat, as long as you copy the right Cat.
